Growing up, my mom always told me “don’t take any wooden nickels.” This year we were handed one, GIANT wooden nickel by no fault of our own, and if you weren’t carefully managing your finances in 2019 then you’re probably seeking new ways to make cash. I have good news and I have bad news. The bad news? Holding down a job during these uncertain times is not easy, some industries are unstable right now. According to The Washington Post, over 33 million Americans have lost their jobs during this pandemic. The good news? There are jobs that are still essential and hiring. Better news? There are ways to make money in addition to the job you already have and some of those ways can be done from the comfort of your own home. 5 Ways To Make Extra Money During The Pandemic:
1. Consignment Shops
Yes, people still need and are buying clothes. Most millennials are turning to thrift and consignment, to get the high of something “new” without the low of blowing a lot of money. When letting go of clothes I try to remember the tried and true rule: if you haven’t worn it in a year, you won't wear it again.
Where to sell?
2. Delivery Service
Yes, our modern-day heroes are doctors, nurses, and teachers, but let us not forget our beloved friends in the delivery services. The good thing about this type of hustle, you have safe coworkers! You, your car, and whatever you are delivering. Now that several businesses have turned to e-commerce there is a need in this industry. Some of my friends are making more money with Instacart, than at the jobs they went to school for! Here is a list of a few delivery services hiring right now:
3. Selling Jewelry
We all have that one pair of earrings, that is absolutely gorgeous! Except for the unfortunate, tragedy of the mate falling down the drain while getting ready. Yeah, I’ve been there too! Whether you’re just over a piece of jewelry, it’s missing a link, or you’ve lost an earring mate to the sink drain, Chapes-JPL will buy your jewelry on spot for cash. That’s right, they buy jewelry in any condition. Not to worry though, your precious gems are not going to a shady pawnshop. Chapes-JPL is a jewelry buyer that has been in the business for over 38 years.
They also have your interests at heart as they do not discuss your business in the showroom, rather all appraisals are conducted in their private offices. Unlike the movies, where everyone finds out how much your emerald heirloom is worth, they respect and protect your privacy.
4. Online Tutoring
These days parents are wearing many, different hats. They are working hard to provide for their family, caring for their children full time, and managing their academic needs. Depending on their circumstances some parents are unable to devote extra time to homework, and assignments. Check out websites like Tutor ABC and VIPKids, where you can apply to tutor children all across the states, and even the world!
5. Social Media
Avocado toast wielding millennials may be the brunt end of every boomer’s joke, but the truth is they’ve got something that many boomers don’t have: tech skills. Whether you can build a website or simply navigate google docs, the demand for quick fingers and thumbs is up. No matter how popular their brick and mortar establishments have proved to be, brands find themselves in a new era. Online visibility is extremely important in order for companies to stay relevant and capture consumer's short attention spans.
If you already have a degree in communications or marketing you’re halfway there. However, do not disqualify yourself if you don’t have a formal education in these areas. Check out websites like Hubspot, for a plethora of free online courses that will give you a wealth of information. Join Facebook Groups, and seek out mentorship, you would be surprised how many people are willing to share their experience with those genuinely wanting to learn! Here’s to not taking any more wooden nickels this year but instead, making some REAL ones!
